Domestic Skills

Our aim

To instill confidence in each of our learners enabling them to prepare a full meal for themselves as well as basic everyday life skills.

What's on offer

What are the duration of classes?

Grade R – Grade 5: Classes are 30mins every alternate week.

Grade 6 and 7: Classes are 60mins every alternate week.

Allergies- how do we handle them?

Parents are required to complete a form at the beginning of each year, stating any allergies and dietary requirements. We then plan our lessons accordingly. We try to come up with alternatives so that children do not miss out.

What do we make?

From Grade R, cooking lessons are obviously very basic eg: mixing, measuring, cutting biscuit dough etc. Higher grades learn more advanced cooking skills and how to use kitchen equipment. Children are responsible for washing up their dishes and cleaning up after themselves.

Is it just cooking cooking?

No. We also do some basic sewing skills, looming, polishing shoes, serviette folding, setting  a table  and wiring plugs. We also invite guests to do demonstrations eg Lindt sent their head chocolatier, a food stylist ( Emma Wilson) came to demonstrate how to present and photograph food and Cait McWilliams, the winner of The Great South African Bake Off, came to speak to us and do a demonstration.

We also have our annual FHPS Bake off at the end of each year.
